WILDWOODS FOUNDATION LAUNCHES FREE PROGRAM “A DROP IN THE BUCKET” FOR SCHOOLS

The Water Conservation Program is sponsored by the LADWP and includes the “How Low Can You Go?” a Conservation Contest for Schools and Residents

2015 may be the fourth driest year on record in California.  Wildwoods’ board member Tracy Quinn, a policy analyst with the Natural Resources Defense Council said, “California is facing a future with more frequent and intensifying droughts, so it is imperative that we learn how to make the most of our water resources.  Wildwoods Foundation’s ‘A Drop in the Bucket’ program will provide children with the skills and knowledge they need to truly value this precious resource and contribute to a more sustainable community.”

Los Angeles Department of Water and Power is funding the return of this popular program for Los Angeles schools, grades 4 – 6.  A Drop in the Bucket was previously offered from 2009 – 2013.   “We are excited to partner with the Wildwoods Foundation. Wildwoods understands that every drop counts and the value of sharing that message with today’s youngsters, who are the next generation of water users,” said LADWP Chief Sustainability Officer Nancy Sutley. “We have a long, proud history of partnering with the educational community and this newest partnership will help us continue to promote wise use of one of life’s most precious resources-water.”

This year, the program will include “How Low Can You Go?” contest for schools and Los Angeles residents.  The school saving the most water will win a pizza party, and the resident who does the same will have a chance at winning a gift card to a local home improvement store.  Rules and restrictions will apply and participation in the program is not necessary for contest registration.

The program will be conducted at the Vista Hermosa Natural Park in downtown Los Angeles, which is run by the Mountains and Recreation Conservation Authority (MRCA). “The MRCA is thrilled that Wildwoods Foundation is once again holding its “A Drop in the Bucket” Program at Vista Hermosa Park. This innovative and interactive program takes on the critically important role of educating the youth of Los Angeles about the importance of water conservation.  Given the severity of the drought and other water quality and conservation issues, programs like these create an informed and eco-literate citizenry.  We are so excited to have them back!”

In addition to the park site, Wildwoods is also offering a mobile unit that will bring the program to Title 1 schools.
