Los Angeles (June 11,2020) – North Hollywood High School placed among the top four teams at the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science National Science Bowl Virtual Final Competition Saturday, June 6.

Dougherty High School in San Ramon, California won the title with Mira Loma High School in the Sacramento area placing second. The other team among the top four was Lubbock High School in Texas.

This year, the schools competed in a field of 61 teams in May after the National Science Bowl in-person competition, scheduled April 30 –May 4 in Washington, DC was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. During May, the preliminary competition was held virtually with each team answering toss-up and bonus questions individually. The top 32 high school teams advanced to the National Finals based on their scores. This format was followed at the final competition.

North Hollywood High School Science Bowl Team members are Shion Murakawa, Theodore Dupont, Albert Zhang, Emily Jin and Cindy Xie. Coaches are Altair Maine and Len Soloff.

Each top four teams will receive $2,000 for their science department.

This marks the 14th trophy for a Los Angeles regional championship team at the National Science Bowl. These trophies include four national championships.

The North Hollywood High School team won the 2020 LADWP Science Bowl Regional Competition in February, the school’s 21st regional title in the last 23 years, to qualify for the national competition. Last year, North Hollywood placed third and in 2018, it placed second. It is the 11th National Science Bowl award for North Hollywood.

Science Bowl is a proud LADWP tradition and example of the Department’s commitment to the Los Angeles educational community. LADWP educational programs include the Adopt-A-School Program, an electric safety program for elementary students, and the Youth Service Academy. This year, LADWP is partnering with two non-profit organizations on school education programs focusing on water and energy conservation. It has also expanded its virtual and digital resources for teachers and students.
