LOS ANGELES –The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) has delivered its 2 millionth compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL) to a Los Angeles residence this week.  Since late January, teams have canvassed the city as part of the innovative CFL delivery program, delivering two of the energy efficient bulbs along with energy saving tips and materials to LADWP residential customers.

Response to the program has been overwhelmingly favorable, with customers sending Twitter messages sharing their thoughts on receiving the free bulbs and materials.  One approving customer commented via Twitter, “Got my free CFLs from LADWP. What a fantastic idea. Good job LA!”

When complete, the citywide CFL distribution program will have delivered 2.4 million bulbs – two bulbs to each of the Department’s 1.2 million residential customers.

“CFLs are one of the many tools our customers can use to reduce their energy use and save money on their electric bills,“ said LADWP Chief Executive Officer and General Manager David Nahai.  “By delivering CFLs right to our customers’ doorsteps – in advance of the warmer months when energy use spikes – we can get a head start on serious energy conservation.”
“Each CFL our customers install prevents the burning of 400 pounds of coal for energy generation and the associated greenhouse gas emissions,” said LADWP Acting Chief Financial Officer Jeff Peltola.  He added, “The bulbs that have been delivered so far represent 91.6 gigawatt-hours of energy savings per year, enough energy to power 15,267 homes each year.”

Each customer is estimated to save $100 in energy costs over the lifespan of the bulbs.  The energy saved through this program, in power that won’t be produced and fuel that won’t be burned, amounts to a savings of $61.3 million for the Department and our ratepayers.  To learn more about CFLs, including special disposal methods recommended for spent bulbs, please call the CFL distribution program telephone line, (213) 367-4614.
