WHAT:
A virtual press event to release the Los Angeles 100% Renewable Energy Study, known as LA100. This groundbreaking independent study is the result of a nearly four-year effort led by the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in conjunction with the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) and an L.A.-based stakeholder advisory group. Using rigorous analysis that combined dozens of models and included more than 100 million simulations, the study is an unprecedented review of the various pathways available to the LADWP – the nation’s largest municipally owned utility – to meet the ambitious clean energy targets set by Mayor Garcetti and the Los Angeles City Council and provide reliable power during high demand conditions.

BACKGROUND:
The Los Angeles City Council and Mayor approved a series of motions in 2016 and 2017 directing LADWP to determine the technical feasibility and investment pathways for a 100% renewable energy portfolio standard. LADWP partnered with NREL to conduct a first of its kind study, which is unprecedented in scope for a vertically integrated utility. LA100 includes reliability as a fundamental requirement for the future grid. It not only looks at the generation and transmission resources necessary to achieve a 100% renewable grid, but also analyzes factors related to costs, jobs and the local economy, and environmental justice.
