Pacific Palisades Fires: Correcting Misinformation about LADWP’s Water System

Main Break Update – 2:00 p.m. Van Nuys Blvd. & Sherman Way

November 2, 2009

Main Break Update – 2:00 p.m.

Van Nuys Blvd. & Sherman Way

LOS ANGELES — LADWP crews have successfully shut off the water main on Sherman Way near Van Nuys Blvd and the line has been removed from service.  Crews are now draining the pipe.  Repair work will follow.

The break occurred this morning on an 8-inch connector to a 54-inch ductile iron pipe used to convey recycled water.  The 54-inch pipe does not appear to have sustained any damage.

Recycled water is high quality water that has been treated and purified for irrigation and industrial uses but it is not used for drinking water.  Non-potable recycled water goes through a separate pipeline system, known as “purple pipe,” to customers.  It is completely separate from LADWP’s drinking water pipeline system.

Regular water service to LADWP customers has not been interrupted.  No damage to area structures has been reported.  Local businesses remain open.

Eastbound traffic along Sherman Way is currently closed.  Two westbound lanes on Sherman Way are open, as are all lanes on Van Nuys Blvd.
