LADWP Urges Granada Hills and Porter Ranch Customers: DO NOT USE TAP WATER TO HELP US RESTORE SERVICE

August 8, 2025

USING TAP WATER & RUNNING SPRINKLER SYSTEMS WILL SLOW SERVICE RESTORATION IN AREA

Granada Hills/Porter Ranch Water Incident Update #7 |
August 8, 2025 – AM Update

Members of LADWP’s field crews monitor pumping activities aimed at restoring water service to affected customers

LADWP crews worked overnight to pump water back into the water system that serves Granada Hills and Porter Ranch, in an effort to restore service to affected customers. The two communities have been without water service or experiencing low water pressure since Wednesday morning as a result of a deeply buried valve that broke, requiring complex repairs,  on a water line that supplies a water tank serving the area. As a result, many residents have experienced either a complete loss of water service or significantly reduced pressure. A Boil Water Notice issued on Wednesday remains in effect.

AREA CUSTOMERS URGED NOT TO USE WATER

Due to the efforts of crews over multiple days, water service was reported by many customers overnight as having been restored. However, LADWP urges customers in Porter Ranch and Granada Hills to avoid using any tap water in their homes or businesses. This includes turning off sprinklers and refraining from using tap water for activities such as watering lawns and gardens, doing laundry, washing dishes, or flushing toilets. Homeowners are also asked to turn off smart irrigation controllers, water heaters, and pool auto fill systems that automatically use water from the system serving the area.

When customers use the water being restored to their homes, the level in the tank that crews are working to pressurize and fill, drops. This is what occurred overnight and why we are strongly urging customers to continue using bottled water for drinking and food preparation and food consumption.  To assist affected communities, LADWP has deployed a range of support services, including bottled water distribution, recycled water for outdoor use and toilet flushing, and access to mobile showers and laundry facilities. Full details are available below.

UPDATE ON PERMANENT REPAIRS

Meanwhile, work is occurring simultaneously at a nearby site where crews need to excavate 24 feet underground to access and repair the damaged valve. The water disruption stems from a deeply buried broken valve on a major 54-inch diameter  water pipeline trunkline that supplies water to the Susana Tank serving the area, with approximately 104 miles of water system pipes serving 9,200 customers impacted by the incident. The repair site is located near critical infrastructure—including oil pipelines, a fiber optic line, and a gas line. The complexity of the operation has now necessitated additional excavation to widen the trench. Repairs are expected to continue through the weekend.

Work continues at excavation site to reach and repair the damaged 54” valve.

We understand how disruptive this situation has been for our customers, and we want to assure the community that restoring water service safely and swiftly remains our top priority. Our crews are working tirelessly on-site, around the clock, until full service is restored. We remain committed to keeping you informed and supported every step of the way.

BOIL WATER NOTICE REMAINS IN EFFECT

While most customers in the area are without water service, many are reporting water flowing at a low pressure. A Boil Water Notice remains in effect today for affected customers in portions of Porter Ranch and Granada Hills due to the ongoing repair work to a broken valve serving the Granada Hills and Porter Ranch communities.

The Boil Water Notice can be accessed by clicking this link: BOIL WATER NOTICE FOR PORTIONS OF PORTER RANCH AND GRANADA HILLS (ladwpnews.com).

Customers located within the affected area must continue to boil their water before using it to drink, cook, make ice cubes, prepare food such as washing vegetables, or to brush teeth until further notice. This is required to ensure safety and public health.

More information regarding this incident can be found at  www.ladwp.com/WaterQuality which includes the Boil Water Notice as well as an interactive map to enter your address if you need to check if the Boil Water Notice applies to you. Regular updates related to this incident are also being updated on our newsroom at www.ladwpnews.com.

BACKGROUND ON WATER LOSS AND ONGOING REPAIR WORK

On August 5th, while water system crews were making repairs at a pump station that connects to a 10-million-gallon water tank that serves the area, a valve that controls the flow of water broke during repairs and failed to reopen. As a result, the water flowing into a 54-inch-diameter pipe serving the area was cut off.

This has led to a water service outage in the general area bounded by Rinaldi Avenue to the south, Balboa Blvd to the east, De Soto Ave to the west and the foothills & hills to the north. For specific boundaries, please refer to the map below.
