Pacific Palisades Fires: Correcting Misinformation about LADWP’s Water System

LADWP Statement on Water Quality in the San Fernando Valley

May 19, 2025

MAY 19, 2025–LADWP has received inquiries and reports from some LADWP customers in the San Fernando Valley about an earthy odor coming from their drinking water. Our water quality test data indicates that the musty, earthy odor is attributable to Geosmin, a natural compound created from algae. Geosmin can be a nuisance to our customers but it is not harmful. It is an occasional and seasonal occurrence caused by changing water temperatures and sunlight.

Since early May 2025, LADWP has increased its water quality monitoring, sampling, and testing throughout our Los Angeles Aqueduct System (LAA System) and the City’s water distribution system in preparation of warming temperatures and increased daylight. LADWP’s expanded sampling has detected elevated Geosmin beginning May 15th, and it has made immediate adjustments to treatment and operations to control the situation. We thank our customers for their patience while the odor causing compounds are successfully removed by these operational changes.

Customers can also remove the odor at home by running their water through a carbon filter pitcher or a carbon filter in the refrigerator water line. Should customers have any questions or concerns regarding their water, please call our Water Quality Hotline at (213) 367-3182.
