LADWP Continues Repairs in Silver Lake Following Tuesday’s Power Outage

LADWP Reminds Customers to Conserve Energy as Temps Remain High

LADWP power crews continue to work around the clock to make electrical repairs in the Silver Lake area following a power outage that caused 20,038 customers to lose power during parts of the evening on Tuesday, June 30 and in the early morning hours on Wednesday, July 1st.

Repairs are expected to be completed before the upcoming July 4th weekend. Temporary repairs were made early Wednesday, July 1st  in order to restore power to area customers as quickly as possible.

The outage, which occurred at the 600 block of North Hoover Street was first reported at 6:27 p.m. on Tuesday evening. LADWP crews responded to the scene and made repairs throughout the night.

Power was first restored to 11,524 customers at intervals between 11 p.m. Tuesday and 2 a.m. Wednesday. At 2:36 a.m.power was restored for 4,020 customers. At 3:17 a.m. power was restored for an additional 2,433 customers. Power was restored to all remaining affected customers at 4:17 a.m.

The public should expect traffic impacts on Thursday and Friday when traveling in the vicinity of the 600 block of Hoover Street and are encouraged to take alternate routes if possible.

While cooler temperatures are expected through the weekend, LADWP reminds  customers to conserve energy throughout the summer months.

High summer temperatures not only lead to more people operating their air conditioners all at once, but also cause other appliances to use more energy by working work harder if turned on at the same time. Such stress can overburden power lines, transformers and other equipment, causing them to fail.

Stay comfortable but conserve energy whenever possible, especially between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.During periods of extreme temperatures high demand for electricity can put strain the power grid, which can increase the likelihood of outages.

To prevent outages and help conserve energy, LADWP recommends the following:

  • Adjust air conditioning thermostats to 78 degrees to reduce energy usage during the hottest hours of the day, 11:00 a.m. through 6:00 p.m., when air conditioning systems have to work hardest to cool.
  • Visit the local library, recreation center, mall, movie theater or any other air conditioned gathering place to give your air conditioner a rest.
  • Limit use of major appliances during peak hours of the day. Use washing machines, dishwashers, vacuum cleaners and other heavy appliances during the early morning hours or after 6:00 p.m.
  • Close window curtains, shades or blinds during the heat of the day to reduce the extra heat from direct sunlight through windows.
  • Ventilate the home in the early morning and evening by opening windows and doors to clear out the heat and allow cooler air to circulate.
  • Turn off lights and other electrical equipment when they are not in use. In the event of power outages, LADWP crews are ready to respond to restore power as quickly and safely as possible.

To report an outage, call 1-800- DIAL-DWP (1-800-342-5397) so that a crew can be dispatched to make repairs. When calling, choose “Report Power Outage” in the automated phone system in order to be connected right away to a live operator. If you see a downed power line, stay away and immediately call 9-1-1.
