LOS ANGELES — North Hollywood High School’s “A” Team won first place today, for ninth time in the last 10 years at the 15th Annual LADWP Science Bowl Regional Competition. Last year the team placed second at the National Science Bowl.
The team will receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (USDOE), to represent the city of Los Angeles at the National Science Bowl, April 26 to April 30, 2007.
The LADWP Science Bowl is an official, regional qualifying tournament of the USDOE National Science Bowl. Subjects cover computer science, biology, physics, earth science, chemistry, astronomy, mathematics and new advances in technology. Annually, about 100 volunteers, mainly LADWP employees and their families, serve as moderators, timekeepers, and scorekeepers.
North Hollywood High School’s “A” Team will be a wonderful representative of city of Los Angeles. The students demonstrated great skill and worked well together. We are proud of them and all participating teams,” said George Rofail, chair of the LADWP Science Bowl Volunteer Steering Committee.
The runner up was the team from Granada Hills High School. Third place was won by the El Camino Real High School Team. Fourth place was award to the “B” Team of North Hollywood High School.
The competition at the National Science Bowl is expected to be tough. A total of 67 regional finalists are expected from 40 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands. This year, 12,000 students will participate in regional competitions.
In addition to the regular buzzer competition, the special Franklin Lu Hands-On Competition was held. The competition is named for Franklin Lu, an electrical engineer and devoted Science Bowl Volunteer, who passed away suddenly in Nov. 2001. This year the competition was called, “Load, Logic and Latitude,” and involved three tasks: building a structure from paper; designing a boat made of aluminum foil to float holding the most pennies; and providing answers to brain-twisting puzzles.
In this competition the “B” Team from San Pedro High School placed first. The school was awarded the Franklin Lu Hands-On Trophy.
Second place was presented to the “A” Team from San Pedro High School. Third place went to Reseda High School and fourth place to Taft High School.
In addition to LADWP and the U. S. Department of Energy, regional event sponsors include CityView Channel 35, the Hitachi Southern California Regional Community Action Committee (SCRCAC), the Hitachi Foundation, Gelson’s Markets, AT&T, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), City National Bank, Engineers’ Council, the Water and Power Community Credit Union, the Water Employees’ Club and the Los Angeles Unified School District.
