LADWP Makes Progress Filling Water Tank Serving Granada Hills and Porter Ranch
Granada Hills/Porter Ranch Water Incident Update #8
August 8, 2025 – PM Update
LADWP Crews Excavating Work Area in Preparation for the Valve Repair
LADWP crews continue making progress on restoring water service to Granada Hills and Porter Ranch by actively pumping water back into the local system. As of 8:10 PM, the 10-million-gallon tank serving the area had reached 23 percent of its total capacity. To accelerate the restoration process, additional pumps are scheduled to arrive on Saturday to boost water flow into the system.
LADWP will notify customers once pumping operations are complete and water can be used for purposes other than drinking or cooking. Before lifting the Boil Water Notice, a comprehensive testing process will be conducted to ensure the water meets safety standards for consumption.
Since Wednesday morning, two communities in the San Fernando Valley have either had no water service or have been dealing with low water pressure due to a broken valve buried deep underground. The damaged valve is part of a water line that feeds a local water tank, and its repair has proven to be complex.
So far, three-hundred residents have picked up recycled, non-potable water from three of the five LADWP resource centers set up to support the community. A vendor hired by LADWP is also going door-to-door throughout the two affected areas, watering medians, parkways, and other shared green spaces—making sure local vegetation stays healthy even as residents are asked to conserve water.

AREA CUSTOMERS URGED NOT TO USE WATER
Due to the efforts of crews over multiple days, water service was reported by many customers overnight as having been restored. However, LADWP reminds customers in Porter Ranch and Granada Hills to avoid using any tap water in their homes or businesses. This includes turning off sprinklers and refraining from using tap water for activities such as for showering, watering lawns and gardens, doing laundry, washing dishes, or flushing toilets. Homeowners are also asked to turn off smart irrigation controllers, and pool auto fill systems that automatically use water from the system serving the area.
When customers use the water being restored to their homes, the level in the tank that crews are working to pressurize and fill, drops. This is what occurred overnight and why we are strongly urging customers to continue using bottled water for drinking and food preparation and food consumption. To assist affected communities, LADWP has deployed a range of support services, including bottled water distribution, recycled water for outdoor use and toilet flushing, and access to mobile showers and laundry facilities. Full details are available below.
UPDATE ON PERMANENT REPAIRS
Meanwhile, work is occurring simultaneously at a nearby site where crews need to excavate 24 feet underground to access and repair the damaged valve. The water disruption stems from a deeply buried broken valve on a major 54-inch diameter water pipeline that supplies the Susana Tank serving the area, with approximately 104 miles of water system pipes serving 9,200 customers impacted by the incident. The repair site is located near critical infrastructure—including oil pipelines, a fiber optic line, and a gas line. The complexity of the operation has now necessitated additional excavation to widen the trench. Repairs are expected to continue through the weekend.
Work continues at excavation site to reach and repair the damaged 54” valve
We understand how disruptive this situation has been for our customers, and we want to assure the community that restoring water service safely and swiftly remains our top priority. Our crews are working tirelessly on-site, around the clock, until full service is restored. We remain committed to keeping you informed and supported every step of the way.
BOIL WATER NOTICE REMAINS IN EFFECT
Boil Water Notices Posted in Affected Areas
While most customers in the area are without water service, many are reporting water flowing at a low pressure. A Boil Water Notice remains in effect today for affected customers in portions of Porter Ranch and Granada Hills due to the ongoing repair work to a broken valve serving the Granada Hills and Porter Ranch communities.
The Boil Water Notice can be accessed by clicking this link: BOIL WATER NOTICE FOR PORTIONS OF PORTER RANCH AND GRANADA HILLS (ladwpnews.com).
Customers located within the affected area must continue to boil their water before using it to drink, cook, make ice cubes, prepare food such as washing vegetables, or to brush teeth until further notice. This is required to ensure safety and public health.
More information regarding this incident can be found at www.ladwp.com/WaterQuality which includes the Boil Water Notice as well as an interactive map to enter your address if you need to check if the Boil Water Notice applies to you. BACKGROUND ON WATER LOSS AND ONGOING REPAIR WORK
On August 5th, while water system crews were making repairs at a pump station that connects to a 10-million-gallon water tank that serves the area, a valve that controls the flow of water broke during repairs and failed to reopen. As a result, the water flowing into a 54-inch-diameter pipe serving the area was cut off.
This has led to a water service outage in the general area bounded by Rinaldi Avenue to the south, Balboa Blvd to the east, De Soto Ave to the west and the foothills & hills to the north. For specific boundaries, please refer to the map below.

Apart from working to access and repair the valve, LADWP crews are also taking multiple approaches to route water back to the trunkline and restore water service to customers sooner as they continue to make permanent repairs. On August 7, LADWP began pumping water from a nearby Metropolitan Water District of Southern California supply into LADWP’s 54-inch trunkline supplying the area.
