Pacific Palisades Fires: Correcting Misinformation about LADWP’s Water System

SFV Power Outage – Receiving Station J Fire Update #2

July 8, 2017

LOS ANGELES (July 8, 2017) – Crews are on site assisting LAFD operations and assessing damage at the scene of a fire at Receiving Station J (RS-J) in the North San Fernando Valley at this time.

Preliminary information from Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) grid operators are that approximately 140,000 residential and commercial customers in the areas of Northridge, Winnetka, Reseda, Lake Balboa, Tarzana, North Hills, Granada Hills, Chatsworth, West Hills, Canoga Park, and Woodland Hills are currently without power due to power having been cut off at RS-J to allow crews to work safely to put out the fire.

While the fire involved only one part of RS-J, shutting off power to and from the station was necessary to protect firefighters and LADWP crews.

RS-J is part of the energy transmission system in this part of the City and that system was significantly disrupted by the fire and subsequent outage. Once the fire is out and the system is stabilized, crews will work to reenergize affected areas as quickly as possible. Until crews are able to assess the extent of damage at RS-J it is not possible to estimate the time for service restoration.

LADWP provides power to 1.6 million customers in the City of Los Angeles.

LADWP apologizes for the inconvenience and appreciates customers’ patience as we work to restore power as safely and quickly as possible.
