WHAT:         LADWP Science Bowl XXXI Regional Competition

WHO:           About 170 top science students from 19 high schools, 34 teams, 100            volunteer officials including Science Bowl alumni, LADWP employees,                                  retirees and community members.

WHEN:         Saturday, March 4, 2023, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

WHERE:       LADWP John Ferraro Headquarters Building, 111 N. Hope St., CA 90012,    Enter from Customer Lot on Hope St.

MORE:           Teams compete in game-show format contest answering challenging college-level math, science and technology questions presented by moderators.

The winning team at the regional competition will represent the City and Region at the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science National Science Bowl in Washington, DC, April 27-May 1, 2023. The winner of the National Science Bowl is the national champion.

LADWP regional championship teams have won five national titles and placed among the top five teams 15 times.  Science Bowl showcases the talents, skills and abilities of some of the city’s best high school science scholars.

Science Bowl follows a game show format of moderators asking  questions to two teams of four students. Toss-up questions are worth five points with team members buzzing in. The member buzzing in the fastest and answers the question correctly earns five points for his or her team and the right to answer the bonus question worth 10 points. The team with the most points wins the match.

LADWP Science Bowl is one of eight regional competitions in California and 65 nationwide at the high school level. Since the program began in 1991, more than 330,000 students have participated in this program. This year nationally about 9,000 students at the high school level in 65 regional competitions are participating and 5,000 middle school students in 45 regionals.

The LADWP Science Bowl covers the geographic area of the Los Angeles Unified School District and includes public, charter, private and parochial schools.
