Washington, D.C. (April 28, 2025) – North Hollywood High School won 3rd place at the National Science Bowl competition held in Washington, D.C. Representing Los Angeles, North Hollywood High School demonstrated extraordinary scientific knowledge and teamwork against more than 65 high school regional teams from across the country at the National Science Bowl Competition organized by the U.S. Department of Energy.

The National Science Bowl is among the nation’s largest science-based academic competitions and the only one sponsored by a federal agency. Since its inception in 1991, more than 325,000 students have participated in the program.
North Hollywood High School faced tough competition, Montgomery Blair High School from Maryland emerged as the overall champion and Lexington High School from Massachusetts secured a second place finish.
North Hollywood High School’s impressive performance and winning first place at the 2025 LADWP Regional Science Bowl in March highlighted their dedication and excellence which lead them to the opportunity to represent the Los Angeles region at the 2025 National Science Bowl. North Hollywood High School’s participation in the National Science Bowl not only emphasizes the school’s academic expertise, but also underscores the importance of STEM education in preparing students for future success in scientific fields.
The first place team won $5,000 for their school’s science department. The second-place team will also receive $5,000 and the top 16 teams each receive $1,000 for their schools’ science departments. The North Hollywood High School winning team members are Connor Zhao, Connor Chang, Mingao Guo, Suzuko Ohshima, Charles Huang.
For more than 30 years, LADWP has committed to helping students understand important STEM concepts and plan for future careers through the Science Bowl Competition. Science Bowl follows a game-show format with a moderator asking toss-up and bonus questions of two teams of four students. Questions cover college-level math, science, and technology topics. Sixteen teams compete in round-robin and double elimination tournaments.
