Pacific Palisades Fires: Correcting Misinformation about LADWP’s Water System

WHEN:

WHERE:

{Please RSVP for address}

WHO:

  • Mayor Karen Bass
  • Homeowner
  • Councilmember Tim McOsker, 15th Council District
  • Cynthia McClain-Hill, President of the Board of Water and Power Commissioners
  • Martin Adams, LADWP General Manager and Chief Engineer
  • Kris Tjernell, Deputy Director of CA Department of Water Resources
  • Jonathan Bishop, Chief Deputy Director, California State Water Resources Control Board

WHAT:

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and State and local water officials will be announcing $19 million in grant funding from the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) for climate resilience projects, including one that will pay for free yard transformations in underserved LA communities.

$14.6 million of the grant from DWR’s Urban Community Drought Relief Grant Program will fund a free turf replacement program for LADWP customers with single-family homes in LA’s disadvantaged communities. The funding will go fund the replacement of water-thirsty lawns — at no cost to customers – with water-efficient landscapes installed by professional landscapers under contract with LADWP.

The remainder of the State’s grant will go toward the construction of the Dominguez Gap Recycled Water Project in the City of Wilmington. This pipeline connection will help offset the demand for drinking water equivalent to that used by 47,000 customers per year. This project is scheduled for completion by 2025 and is a partnership amongst several agencies, including the LA County Public Works and the Water Replenishment District.

BACKGROUND:

The funding for the climate resilience projects are part of DWR’s new “Go Golden” initiative, recognizing the innovative water projects that are making California climate resilient. DWR is providing state funding with local partnerships to advance groundwater recharge, drought resiliency, conservation, stormwater capture, flood management, recycled water and other projects that are helping Los Angeles’ water supply.
