Pacific Palisades Fires: Correcting Misinformation about LADWP’s Water System

LADWP Windstorm Response Update, Wednesday, January 8

January 8, 2025

LADWP Windstorm Response Update
Wednesday, January 8, 2025: 8 AM

Below is an update on our Windstorm Response as of 8AM, Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2025.

RESPONSE TO POWER OUTAGES
Currently, customers experiencing a power outage should expect that it could take up to 48 hours before our crews are able to respond.  High winds and fire conditions continue to present hazards for our crews and can affect response times and restoration efforts.

The number of customers without power as of 8am is 135,679 out of LADWP’s 1.5 million electric customers. Of the 1.5 million electric customers, 32 customers have been without power for over 10 hours, and 7 customers without power for over 18 hours.

LADWP has restored power to 77,797 customers since the start of the storm. The communities with the most impacted customers are Sherman Oaks, North Hollywood Pacoima and Studio City in the valley, and Los Feliz, Sawtelle, El Sereno and Highland Park in the Metro area.

Customers experiencing an outage can expect that a crew will respond in 24 to 48 hours. We are monitoring conditions closely and will adjust response times if it becomes necessary.

Approximately 40% of the outages are due to LADWP crews having to de-energize circuits due to the high winds and to support for firefighting efforts.

Boil Water Notice to be Issued for Pacific Palisades 90272 & Adjacent  Communities North of San Vincente Blvd.
Extraordinary demand for water in the Pacific Palisades, four times our normal demand over a sustained period for firefighting efforts resulted in lowered water pressure in part of the Pacific Palisades. When the water pressure lowers, it can lead to bacteria becoming present in the water. This morning, a boil water notice will be issued for customers in the Pacific Palisades area’s 90272 zip code and the adjacent area north of San Vicente Blvd. This applies to water that is used for brushing teeth, making ice cubes, and food preparation such as washing produce. The boil water notice may stay in place for two or more days while LADWP crews re-pressurize the system and conduct tests to confirm water quality.

WATER SUPPLY PREPAREDNESS & AVAILABILITY IN PACIFIC PALISADES
In advance of the fire, LADWP activated its emergency preparedness protocols and filled all available water storage facility tanks (around 114 throughout the City), including three 1-million-gallon tanks in Palisades area.

Water was supplied continuously to the area through our pipes flowing to the Palisades area and remains available but is limited in areas at higher elevations, impacting some fire hydrants. This occurred because demand exceeded the speed with which the three water tanks located at higher elevations in the Pacific Palisades could be replenished due to extreme water demand. Due to the intensity of fires, various contingency plans were impacted, hampering access to the tanks by crews. At one-point crews attempting to reroute water to refill the Marquez Knolls tank had to be evacuated.

WATER CONSERVATION URGED TO SUPPORT FIRE FIGHTING
We are balancing firefighting efforts with water demand for our customers. We ask all LADWP customers to please conserve water, especially those customers located on the west side of the City. This will help as we prioritize firefighting support.

We have deployed seven water trucks (water tenders) around midnight last night to LAFD that range from 2,000-gallon to 4,000-gallon capacity to further support firefighting efforts. Another 11 water trucks were deployed this morning.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR OUR CUSTOMERS
The LADWP Emergency Center (EOC) is activated to coordinate our response across the organization and will operate 24/7 until our response returns to normal conditions. We are also coordinating with City of LA Emergency Operations Center.

Customers are reminded to dial 911 if they see a downed wire however, if they run into an issue connecting with 911, they can report it by calling 1-800-DIAL-DWP or to report it online at ladwp.com/outages. Strong winds can knock over trees, or cause branches and palm fronds to strike power lines which could result in power outages. If that occurs, a crew’s first responsibility is to secure the affected area to protect the public from safety hazards posed by downed trees and power lines, followed by the removal of trees entangling LADWP power poles and power lines. Only after this is done can crews begin repair work to restore power.

We continue to share information via our social media channels.
