LADWP Urges Customers to “Fix A Leak” this Week
LOS ANGELES—March 17 to March 23 is “Fix a Leak Week.” The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) joins the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) in reminding all customers to check their homes and businesses for water leaks this week. Doing so is good practice and is particularly important during this time when California is experiencing the driest winter in more than 100 years.

According to the US EPA, approximately 10 percent of U.S. homes have leaks that waste 90 gallons or more per day. Fixing running toilets and leaky faucets, plumbing joints and sprinkler systems can conserve up to 20 gallons of water per leak per day. Doing so will also reflect significant savings on water and sewer bills.

To initiate a water leak inspection, LADWP customers should do the following:

  1. Place a few drops of food coloring in the toilet tank and check if any color shows up in the bowl without flushing. 
  2. Check washers and gaskets in leaky faucets and replacing them if necessary.
  3. Use a wrench and pipe tape to tighten leaky showerheads.
  4. Inspect the garden hose, drip irrigation and sprinkler system to ensure that they are water tight.

Fixing most leaks can be quick and easy, but customers should consult the local hardware store or licensed plumber, if necessary. LADWP customers may also consider installing high efficiency toilets, low flow showerheads and aerators during Fix a Leak Week to implement more water-saving measures.
