Los Angeles Rainstorm Power Outages Update
LADWP Urges Caution around Downed Power Lines
LOS ANGELES (February 17, 2017) — As of 2 p.m., approximately 28,000 of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power’s (LADWP) 1.5 million electric customers are affected by power outages as a result of the strong wind and rain moving through the Los Angeles area. The utility is working hard to restore power to all customers as quickly and safely as possible with crews working around the clock. LADWP staff will continue to work around the clock as the storm progresses.
Neighborhoods experiencing the most outages at this time include:
Hyde Park – 3,300 customers without power
Canoga Park – 3,050 customers without power
Larchmont – 3,200 customers without power
Mid-Wilshire – 1,600 customers without power
Van Nuys – 2,000 customers without power
Sherman Oaks – 1,800 customers without power
The most frequent causes of power outages during heavy rain storms are downed trees, dried palm fronds, tree branches from trees on both private and public property falling and making contact with power lines. This can result in extended outages as trees often need to be removed before our crews can begin restoration work.
LADWP added extra crews in advance of the latest storm systems and they are currently working in affected neighborhoods under tough weather conditions.
LADWP urges all customers to use caution around downed or dangling power lines or poles. If you see a downed wire, always assume it is LIVE and immediately dial 9-1-1. Never touch a downed power line.
