Pacific Palisades Fires: Correcting Misinformation about LADWP’s Water System

LADWP Drives Home Sustainability Message at LA Auto Show

LADWP Drives Home Sustainability Message at LA Auto Show

LOS ANGELES —The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) is hosting an interactive booth at the 2014 L.A. Auto Show from November 21 through the 30th at the Los Angeles Convention Center.  The new LADWP space at the popular L.A. event draws attendees to a colorful presentation simulating a green, environmental fair within a park setting. The exhibit highlights the enhanced electric vehicle (EV) charger rebate program, now made simpler and more accessible to businesses, as well as many of the Department’s most important sustainable programs in water conservation, residential solar and energy efficiency. The display aims to educate the Auto Show attendees, especially EV drivers and enthusiasts, about the country’s largest municipal utility’s commitment to sustainability, and to encourage them to take advantage of LADWP rebate programs fit for their lifestyles.

LADWP General Manager Marcie Edwards says, “LADWP supports EV adoption because of its environmental as well as economic benefits to our customers. As EV interest increases, LADWP continues to promote the installation of commercial EV charging infrastructure for public, workplace, and fleet charging.  I invite all to visit our booth and learn about the EV charger and other water and energy rebates for your home or business.”

“Charge Up LA!” provides rebates up to $750 for LADWP residential and up to $1,000 for commercial customers who install Level 2 chargers (240 Volt) in their home or business in LADWP’s service area, which includes the City of L.A. and parts of the Owens Valley.  To date, the rebate program has provided more than $2 million in rebates towards the installation of over 1,300 chargers.  In addition, LADWP has retrofitted 249 legacy Level 2 EV chargers on City property and installed 11 DC fast chargers.”

Minimum requirements for both businesses and multi-family property owners are now easier to meet in order to receive a rebate. Commercial customers only need to provide five parking spaces to qualify for one charger rebate. One additional Level 2 rebate is available for every 20 additional parking spaces. The previous requirement for businesses was 250 spaces and a minimum of 350 customer visits or transactions per day at their properties.

LADWP’s “Charge Up LA!” program supports EV infrastructure in several ways to meet the specific needs of many more customers.

Home Charging:  Residential customers who purchase an EV are eligible for a $750 rebate when they purchase and install a wall-mounted charger.  Customers who choose to install a separate Time-of-Use meter for their EV charger to take advantage of the LADWP off-peak EV discount rate will receive an additional $250 bonus.

Public Charging: Commercial rebates are available for Los Angeles businesses and property owners who wish to install chargers on or near their premises for their employees, tenants and the public at large. Up to $750 is available for each wall mounted charger and $1000 for pedestal-type chargers. A commercial customer who qualifies for 20 chargers (the maximum under the program) may exchange the Level 2 charger rebate for a DC Fast Charger (Direct Current of up to 440 Volts).  These chargers can typically charge an EV in 20 to 30 minutes for vehicles equipped for this type of charger.  This option allows LADWP customers flexibility to meet their business needs and those of their customers. This component of the program helps address the need for additional public charging, providing greater vehicle range and confidence for EV drivers who may fear running out of power.

The rebate program is funded by proceeds from a grant LADWP received for the purchase of natural gas trucks that it incorporated into its operation fleet. The rebate program will run from August 1, 2013 to June 30, 2015 with a program goal of 2,000 rebates.  The new rebates are available to both residential and commercial customers on a first-come first-served basis until funds are exhausted or the program date ends.
