LADWP Science Bowl Is Among Most Successful Regional Competitions
In U.S. Department of Energy Program
North Hollywood High School To Defend Regional Title

What: Sixteenth Annual LADWP Science Bowl, a quiz show style high school competition, centered on complex college-level math, science and technology questions.  LADWP Science Bowl, among the nation’s most successful regional competitions in U.S. Department of Energy National Science Bowl program.  Local teams have won four national titles and placed in top five rankings in nine of the last 13 years.  The Franklin Lu Hands-On Competition held in the afternoon. Hands-On event named for late employee volunteer.

When:  Saturday, February 23, 2008

-8:30 a.m.  Competition begins – Round Robin  League Play

-1 – 4 p.m. Double Elimination Tournament of 16 teams
Franklin Lu Hands-On Competition, 28 teams

-4:30  p.m. Approximate time for final round of competition

Where:  LADWP Headquarters, John Ferraro Building, 111 N. Hope Street, A-level, Downtown Los Angeles, Thomas Guide grid point 634-F3

Who:
-Celebrity Moderator, Dr. Ed Krupp, Director, Griffith Observatory
-Alumni Coach, Richard Erdman, formerly Venice High School (retired)
-Alumni Moderator Adam Diament, PhD, former UCLA post doctoral fellow in genetics; member 1993 Venice High School Science Bowl Team.
-Alumni Moderator Tim Liggett, Science Teacher, Whittier High School
-More than 250 of the city’s best students on 42 teams from 30 high schools
-About 100 volunteers, mainly LADWP employees and their family members.

Why: Science Bowl seeks to showcase talents of local high school scholars, enhances student achievement by providing motivation and incentives for success, and encourages students of all backgrounds to pursue studies and careers in math, science and technology fields. A total of 67 regional competitions are held in 40 states, 10 in California.
