Pacific Palisades Fires: Correcting Misinformation about LADWP’s Water System

Fairfax District Main Leaks Update #2, 9:00 a.m.

April 3, 2012

Fairfax District Main Leaks

Update #2, 9:00 a.m.

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power is responding to six water main leaks this morning in the Fairfax District of Los Angeles at the following locations:

900 block of Croft Avenue

5800 block of La Mirada Avenue

6000 block of Waring Avenue

1100 block of N. McCadden Place

300 block of N. Vista Street

Intersection of Fairfax Avenue & Third Street

LADWP crews are on-site at all locations and work to repair the leaks and restore the mains to service is under way.

One traffic diversion is in effect for Third Street, which is closed between Ogden Drive and Fairfax Avenue due to the main leak affecting that intersection. Drivers are advised to plan their routes accordingly.

Approximately 130 LADWP water customers are experiencing service interruptions or lowered pressure due to these leaks.

The leaks are related to inspection work that occurred yesterday at the Lower Franklin Reservoir, which serves this area of Los Angeles. Franklin Reservoir has a floating cover which requires periodic inspection and maintenance. As part of regular inspection protocol, the reservoir is taken offline and temporarily replaced by a different source of water. Operational changes such as these can cause fluctuations in pressure and expose weaknesses in older main lines.

Additional system adjustments will be made today to minimize pressures fluctuations while the inspection and maintenance of the reservoir cover are in progress. The reservoir work should be completed by the end of the week.

LADWP will make updates via www.ladwpnews.com, and the Department’s Twitter account, @LADWP, as more information becomes available.
