Board of Water and Power Commissioners Green Lights Additional Funding for LAUSD Student Worker Program at LADWP
LOS ANGELES — A memorandum of understanding between the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) and the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) was approved by the Board of Water and Power Commissioners today to provide funding for the Department’s Youth Services Academy (YSA). The career development program employs up to 30 student workers at any given time, and provides specialized, paid, on-the-job training experience, classroom instruction and mentoring at the utility for local high school students.  In its 24th year, the program has provided meaningful career and work experience for thousands of students since its inception.

At today’s meeting, Commission President Mel Levine, together with the entire Board welcomed nine of the students who are participating in this year’s program and said, “This program affirms the department’s commitment to workforce development and education, and to inspiring the young Los Angeles residents who are our future leaders.  One of these students could grow up to be a successful engineer, accountant or line crew member – or even aspire to run this Department one day.  The Board recognizes the value of this program, and is pleased to authorize its renewal.”

The YSA program began in 1990, and has since provided work experience and mentoring for more than 3,000 students age 16 to 20. Student workers can only work up to 16 hours per week and may stay in the program for up to one year, including up to six months after graduation. High school students will be paid $8.51 per hour, and $9.50 per hour after they graduate. The current agreement between LAUSD and LADWP is authorized through June 30, 2014. The new MOU extends the program for up to three additional years.
