Pacific Palisades Fires: Correcting Misinformation about LADWP’s Water System

5PM Wednesday, January 8 LADWP Windstorm and Fire Response

January 8, 2025

LADWP Windstorm Response Update
Wednesday, January 8, 2025: 5PM

RESPONSE TO POWER OUTAGES
The number of customers without power as of 5pm is 123,000 out of LADWP’s 1.5 million electric customers. LADWP has restored power to 133,00 customers since the start of the storm.

Customers experiencing an outage can expect that a crew will respond in 24 to 48 hours.

LADWP has requested mutual assistance from PG&E and we are also working closely with Southern California Edison to support each other to restore power as quickly and safely as possible.

Boil Water Notice Issued for Pacific Palisades 90272 & Adjacent  Communities North of San Vincente Blvd.
Earlier today, a boil water notice was issued for customers in the Pacific Palisades area’s 90272 zip code and the adjacent area north of San Vicente Blvd. This applies to water that is used for brushing teeth, making ice cubes, and food preparation such as washing produce. The boil water notice may stay in place for two or more days while LADWP crews re-pressurize the system and conduct tests to confirm water quality.

WATER SUPPLY PREPAREDNESS & AVAILABILITY IN PACIFIC PALISADES
In advance of the fire, LADWP activated its emergency preparedness protocols and filled all available water storage facility tanks and reservoirs, including three 1-million-gallon tanks in Palisades area.

Water continues to flow in the Palisades area through our main system. The high winds severely limited air operations and the number of fire hoses deployed depleted our tanks in the area, which has affected hydrants at high elevations. We immediately implemented our contingency plan to provide water trucks to support our firefighters, and our crews are working on how to refill the tanks during this very active firestorm.

We have deployed nineteen 2,000 – 4,000-gallon tanker trucks to further support firefighting efforts and are working right now with our water agency partners to increase water pressure to the area.

We are also asking our customers in the Westside to conserve water to make sure we are ready as the winds and dry conditions continue.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR OUR CUSTOMERS
Our crews are working around the clock to restore power outages. Conditions for our crews are very hazardous, so we ask for your patience.

The LADWP Emergency Center (EOC) is activated to coordinate our response across the organization and will operate 24/7 until our response returns to normal conditions. We are also coordinating with City of LA Emergency Operations Center.

Customers are reminded to dial 911 if they see a downed wire however, if they run into an issue connecting with 911, they can report it by calling 1-800-DIAL-DWP or to report it online at ladwp.com/outages. Strong winds can knock over trees, or cause branches and palm fronds to strike power lines which could result in power outages. If that occurs, a crew’s first responsibility is to secure the affected area to protect the public from safety hazards posed by downed trees and power lines, followed by the removal of trees entangling LADWP power poles and power lines. Only after this is done can crews begin repair work to restore power.

If customers experience an outage:

  • Report outages online and track crew status at com/outages or by calling 1-800-DIAL-DWP (1-800-342-5397).
  • Switch off all lights, except for one, so you will know when your power has been restored.
  • Keep your refrigerator closed to keep food cold for longer.
  • Check on vulnerable friends and neighbors to make sure they are safe.

We continue to share information via our social media channels.
