WHY:

The Donald C. Tillman Water Reclamation Plant Solar Installation features 1,485 panels that are expected to generate 404 kilowatts—or 581,500 kilowatt-hours per year—enough clean, solar power to serve 90 homes. The solar development is one of the many “green” projects and programs initiated by the Bureau of Sanitation, which continually provides reliable service that protects public health and the environment. The project benefited from a $1.4 million solar rebate provided by LADWP, which funded over half the project cost, as part of its Solar Incentive Program. The program aims to encourage development of solar power on customer rooftops to increase the amount of clean, renewable energy serving Los Angeles, and help reduce the City's overall carbon footprint.

The Haynes Generating Station Repowering Project will replace Units 5 and 6 with six 100 megawatt quick-start turbines capable of delivering full power in just 10 minutes, as opposed to the day and a half ramp-up time required by older units. The new units will be cooled without ocean water, instead using structures known as “dry cooling" towers.

Now, more than a century later, with drinking water quality regulations calling for the removal of open-air reservoirs, LADWP is returning to the Headworks site to construct two buried underground reservoirs with a combined capacity of 110 million gallons that will allow Silver Lake and Ivanhoe Reservoirs to be removed from service. The construction of Headworks Reservoir will allow LADWP to meet drinking water quality compliance deadlines, and continue to uphold the quality and reliability of the city’s drinking water supply.
