Please be advised that we are cancelling the meeting that was planned for Saturday, February 11, 2012. We will be re-scheduling the IRP-related meeting in the future to discuss elements of the IRP and solicit your feedback. You will receive an invitation to those discussions. More than 50 Teams from 31 Schools Participate

WHAT: Scrimmage for Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) Science Bowl XX

WHO: More than 250 of city's brightest students prepare for February 25th regional competition

WHEN: Saturday, January 14, 2012, 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

WHY: The Science Bowl Scrimmage prepares teams for the LADWP Science Bowl Regional Competition on Saturday, February 25 at LADWP downtown headquarters. During the scrimmage, partcipants have an opportunity to hone their skills and face teams from schools throughout the city The winning team from the regional competition in February represents the city at the National Science Bowl in Washington, DC in late April.

Science Bowl follows a game show format, in which teams of four students, each with an alternate, compete to answer challenging toss-up and bonus questions requiring extensive knowledge, quick reflexes and teamwork. Questions cover college level math, science and technology subjects. The February 25 regional competition is one of 69 at the high school level in more than 40 states, including 10 in California. This is part of the U.S. Department of Energy National Science Bowl program, the nation's largest science competition and the only one sponsored by a federal agency. This year more than 13,000 high school students will participate nationally. Since the program began in 1991 more than 200,000 students have participated.

Science Bowl encourages students from all backgrounds and communities throughout the city, state and nation to study and pursue careers in math, science and technology. The program showcases the talent and hard work of some of LA's best students. Winning teams from the LADWP Science Bowl Regional Competition have won four national titles and placed among the top five teams 10 times. LADWP is only among a few utilities that serve as a Science Bowl regional coordinating sponsor.

LADWP Board to Hold Special Meeting on December 6

LOS ANGELES — On December, 6, 2011 at 11:30 a.m., the Board of Water and Power Commissioners will hold a special session to vote on the Department’s adoption of the California Renewable Energy Resources Act (SB 2 (1X)). Governor Brown signed SB 2 (1X) into law on April 12, 2011, setting new Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) procurement targets, new renewable resource eligibility definitions and new reporting requirements applicable to Publicly Owned Utilities (POUs). It is anticipated that SB 2 (1X) will become effective on or about December 10, 2011. In accordance with the newly added Section 399.30(e) of the Public Utilities Code (PUC), SB2 (X1) requires the governing boards of POUs to adopt “a program for enforcement of this article” on or before January 1, 2012.

At the special meeting, the LADWP Board will deliberate adoption of this RPS Policy and Enforcement Program as amended, which will modify LADWP RPS Compliance Targets and eligible renewable energy resources, add RPS portfolio content categories, and modify or add other compliance considerations.

SB 2 (1X) also requires the California Energy Commission (CEC) to “adopt regulations specifying procedures for enforcement of this article”, which includes a public process under which the CEC may issue a notice of violation and correction against a POU for failure to comply. The CEC is further required to refer violations of its regulations to the California Air Resources Board which may impose penalties using its authority under AB 32 (California Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006). It is the intent of LADWP to comply with the provisions of the Act, and with applicable regulations adopted by the CEC pursuant to the Act, however, the LADWP Board will retain its jurisdiction to enforce the RPS Program in accordance with PUC Section 399.30(e).

Project Marks the Beginning of the Elimination of Ocean Water Cooling at LADWP's Coastal Power Plants

BACKGROUND:	Haynes Generating Station is a natural gas and steam power plant built in the mid-1960s. The station currently has seven power generating units with a combined capacity of 1,600 megawatts- enough to power approximately 1 million homes. The Haynes Generating Station Repowering Project will replace Units 5 and 6 with six 100 megawatt quick-start turbines capable of delivering full power in just 10 minutes, as opposed to the day and a half ramp-up time required by older units. The new units will be cooled without ocean water, instead using structures known as “dry cooling" towers.
PHOTO OP:	Following the ceremonial groundbreaking, members of the media are invited to take a guided tour of the facility. The tour will include a stop on top of Unit 6, 121 feet above sea level, offering spectacular vistas and a view of the power plant, a one-of-a-kind photo and video opportunity.

Solar Power in Los Angeles: Change In Public Meeting Due to Demand

LADWP Offers More Meeting Opportunities To Attend a Workshop on LADWP Solar Programs

Due to demand and the desire of the LADWP to be able to share program information and respond to all inquiries and questions regarding its proposed solar programs, the one public meeting that was planned for 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 14 has been cancelled and replaced by four meeting options.

The LADWP will host four public workshops at the LADWP headquarters building in Downtown Los Angeles, Thursday, July 14, 2011, and Friday, July 15, 2011. There will be two workshops each day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.

Each workshop will be divided in two parts: the Solar Incentive Program re-launch and the proposed design of a Local Renewable Energy Program, commonly referred to as Feed-in-Tariff. In each session, LADWP representatives will present information and obtain feedback from customers and the public on the proposed plans for these two programs.

Please RSVP for one of the four workshops. Attendance for each workshop will be limited to the first 125 guests who RSVP.
