COUNCILMEMBER JAN PERRY, CD-TECH, LADWP LAUNCH
GREEN JOB TRAINING FOR SOUTH L.A. COMMUNITY

What:            
The South Los Angeles Youth Energy Services (SLA-YES) Press Event will launch a career-track, job-training program for at-risk youth to become specialists in energy and water conservation programs and technologies, with the goal of increasing water and energy conservation among South Los Angeles residents. LADWP officials will present a ceremonial check for $150,000 to the Community Development Technologies Center (CDTech).

Visuals:  The first YES cohort of 20 young adults will be on-hand to celebrate the program launch.

Background:
LADWP has partnered with CDTech to provide green job training for 150 South Los Angeles youth between the ages of 21 and 25. The YES trainees will learn to conduct “green audits” of energy and water use among South Los Angeles residences, and educate customers on ways to conserve water and power while helping to lower their utility bills. SLA-YES is a program of the South Los Angeles Green Jobs Collaborative, and funded through $750,000 in grants from the L.A. City Community Development Department (CDD) and LADWP. (LADWP provided $150,000 while the CDD provided a $600,000 Energy Services Block Grant to the L.A. Urban League as the lead agency for the SLA Green Jobs Collaborative.
