LOS ANGELES — In a bold display of lightning-speed reflexes, agility under pressure and an impressive grasp of advanced science, math and technology concepts, North Hollywood High School Team A came out on top, taking first place at the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power’s (LADWP) 18th Annual Science Bowl Regional Competition held today in Downtown Los Angeles. "These students' hours of diligent study and preparation have clearly paid off. North Hollywood High School Science Bowl Team A has proven that it is a force to be reckoned with," said LADWP Interim General Manager S. David Freeman. “Without a doubt, Los Angeles will be well represented at this year’s national competition. We are very proud of their accomplishment and all the teams and competitors at the event,” he said. As regional title holders, the team will receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (USDOE), to represent the City of Los Angeles at the National Science Bowl April 29 to May 4, 2010. Second place winners Granada Hills Charter High School Team A also gave an impressive performance, as well as Third place team North Hollywood High School Team B and fourth place ranked Harvard-Westlake School Team A. Students also showed incredible skill and problem solving abilities in the special Franklin Lu Hands-On Competition, named after the late LADWP electrical engineer and Science Bowl volunteer. This year’s competition involved a series of hands-on puzzles which competitors were to complete within a limited amount of time. The recipient of the first place Franklin Lu Hands-On trophy was Reseda High School Team A with second place presented to Westchester High School. Third and fourth place was awarded to Louisville High School Team A and Harvard-Westlake School Team B respectively.
