18th Annual LADWP Science Bowl Puts
L.A.'s Brightest Science Students to the Test

LOS ANGELES — More than 250 students on 54 teams from 33 public, charter and private high schools throughout the city will compete at the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) Science Bowl Regional Competition on Saturday, February 27, from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Department's downtown headquarters located at 111 North Hope Street.

Entering its 18^th year, LADWP’s Science Bowl demonstrates the Department's commitment to the city’s youth and the Los Angeles educational community. A proud LADWP tradition, the Science Bowl tests students' reflexes, teamwork skills and knowledge of science, math and technology in a fun competitive atmosphere following a television game show format. 

"These science scholars represent the very best of our city's students.  The Science Bowl brings them together to act on their passion for science and sharpen their intellects.  Who knows- there might be some future DWP engineers among them,” stated LADWP Interim General Manager S. David Freeman.

At this year's competition, students will vie for a combined $25,000 in college scholarship funds for themselves and prizes for their respective high schools.  First place team members will each receive a $1,000 Hitachi Scholarship as well as $2,000 for their school.  As regional title holders, the winning team will travel to Washington, D.C. from April 29 to May 4 to represent the city at the U.S. Department of Energy National Science Bowl, where LADWP regional championship teams are among the best, having won four national titles and additional trophies in nine out of the last 15 years. The trip to Washington, D.C. is funded by the Department of Energy.

Sponsors of this year's LADWP Science Bowl include the Hitachi Southern California Regional Action Committee, the Hitachi Foundation, Gelson's Markets, the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), Office Depot, the Engineer's Council, the Water and Power Community Credit Union, the Engineers' Council, the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) and the U.S. Department of Energy.

LADWP Educational Programs also include the Los Angeles Infrastructure Academy, the Youth Service Academy, the Adopt-A-School Program, the Times in Education Program, and partnerships with LAUSD involving the development of new classroom lessons on renewable energy and conservation and a second curriculum for high schools in chemistry related to water quality.
