LADWP PLANS INFORMATIONAL MEETINGS ON TRANSMISSION PROJECT
TO ACCESS RENEWABLE ENERGY IN TEHACHAPI MOUNTAINS AND MOJAVE DESERT
LOS ANGELES - The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) will conduct community meetings to provide updates and information regarding the proposed Barren Ridge Renewable Transmission Project (BRRTP), designed to access a renewable energy resources in the Tehachapi Mountains and Mojave Desert areas.
The $233 million project, which is slated to be completed by 2013, is a critical element of LADWP's plans to meet local and state mandates to reduce environmental impacts associated with climate change, and to increase the amount of renewable energy served to customers to 20 percent by 2010 and 35 percent by 2020.
The proposed line will access wind, solar and geothermal power in Northern Los Angeles and Kern counties, while maximizing the capacity of LADWP's existing transmission corridors. In addition to delivering clean, renewable power to Los Angeles, the proposed BRRTP will also enhance transmission capacity to serve the state's growing population, improve system reliability, and diversify the energy supply. The project includes:
- Constructing about 60 miles of a 230 kilovolt (kV) double-circuit transmission line from the LADWP Barren Ridge Switching Station, located about 14 miles north of Mojave off Highway 14, to Haskell Canyon, located north of Santa Clarita Valley on the southern border of the Angeles National Forest.
- Installing about 12 miles of a 230 kV circuit on the existing double-circuit structures from Haskell Canyon to the Castaic Power Plant.
- Upgrading about 75 miles of the existing Owens Gorge-Rinaldi 230 kV transmission line with larger capacity conductors from the Barren Ridge Switching Station to the Rinaldi Substation in San Fernando.
- Construction of a new electrical switching station at Haskell Canyon.
LADWP, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), and the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) are preparing a joint Environmental Impact Statement and Environmental Impact Report for the project. The agencies have planned five public meetings on topics such as completed studies and results, and evaluation of alternative routes.

All meetings will include an Open House from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. and brief presentation at 7 p.m. followed by a question-answer session.
