The first class comprised of 40 students from high schools in South Los Angeles will be honored as the first graduates of the Los Angeles Infrastructure Academy. The site of the first program was Los Angeles Trade Technical College.
Students, who have been in class twice a week after school since January, have learned about careers in the utilities especially those in the skilled craft trades. They have met many professionals in the utility field, prepared for job entrance examinations, practiced interviewing and public speaking and learned about technology.
The program featured field trips to several facilities including the LADWP Los Angeles Aqueduct Filtration Plant, Metropolitan Water District Diamond Valley Lake, the Gas Company Training Center and the LADWP Truesdale Training Center.
Launched by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and LADWP CEO and General Manager H. David Nahai in Sept. 2007, the mission the LA Infrastructure Academy is to prepare young people for careers in the skilled trades and engineering within local utlilites.
In July, an additional class will begin at Los Angeles Trade Technical College and a new site will open in the College of Engineering at California State University, Los Angeles. This site will focus on utility careers in engineering.
