LADWP COMPETES IN 17th ANNUAL LINEMAN'S RODEO
WHAT: The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) and IBEW Local 18 Union co-host the 17th Annual Lineman's Rodeo and Family Festival.
WHO: Approximately 35 teams of journeymen and 40 teams of apprentice electric distribution mechanics-best known as linemen-from LADWP and public and private power companies throughout Southern California and other western states compete in this event, which showcases the safety techniques, skill and speed of power utility workers.
WHEN: Saturday, May 17, 2008
8:00 a.m. kickoff
2:00 p.m. awards ceremony
WHERE: Truesdale Training Center
11760 Truesdale St.
Sun Valley, CA 91352
VISUALS: Linemen will compete in contests such as the "Egg Speed Climb," in which they must carry a raw egg in their mouth, without breaking cracking it, while speed climbing down a 40-foot power pole. Other competitions include a hurt person rescue, changing out cross-arms, switching equipment while atop power poles, and much more.
WHY: The Lineman's Rodeo offers a chance for linemen to test their skills by engaging in friendly competition, and gives their families and friends the opportunity to see first-hand what their challenging work is all about. Three of the day's winning teams will compete at the International Lineman's Rodeo in Kansas City, Mo., later this year.
DETAILS: Family-friendly fun will include face painting, a climbing wall, petting zoo, balloon sculptor and an inflated jumper for kids, as well as plenty of shaved ice treats, kettle corn, roasted corn on the cob, and homemade barbeque. The Lineman's Rodeo is a private event sponsored by LADWP and IBEW Local 18 Union. The rodeo is coordinated by a volunteer committee of LADWP employees.
