BACKGROUND: Haynes Generating Station is a natural gas and steam power plant built in the mid-1960s. The station currently has seven power generating units with a combined capacity of 1,600 megawatts- enough to power approximately 1 million homes. The Haynes Generating Station Repowering Project will replace Units 5 and 6 with six 100 megawatt quick-start turbines capable of delivering full power in just 10 minutes, as opposed to the day and a half ramp-up time required by older units. The new units will be cooled without ocean water, instead using structures known as “dry cooling" towers.

PHOTO OP:

Following the ceremonial groundbreaking, members of the media are invited to take a guided tour of the facility. The tour will include a stop on top of Unit 6, 121 feet above sea level, offering spectacular vistas and a view of the power plant, a one-of-a-kind photo and video opportunity.
